FOREWORD

Firstly, we wish to thank fellow saints who have been travailing with us in prayers since we started publishing this prayer bulletin in January 2001. They are the Theophiluss who really love the Lord and are committed to His work and to making the entire universe a better place to live in. He will surely reward them commensurably.
Starting with the next edition (Jan – March 2008), this bulletin will bear the title “Praying Through”, just to shorten the erstwhile title. Believe God with us that it will bless you the more, and that He will enable us to continue to publish it. God willing, it will also be available on our website with effect from 1st October this year, so more saints can join us to pray. We cannot pray too much.
If we stopped praying for the Church, for nations, and for people, we would be sinning against the Lord Cf I Sam. 12:23. Let no one go to hell without warning, and without being prayed for.
May this last quarter of the year be better for you all than the first three quarters. (Amen).

His and yours,

Dotun Ajayi,
Director of Missions,
1st October 2007.

Monday 1st October

  •   The devil wants the church to dwell in lack and debts so she will not be able to concentrate on her primary end-time duty of preaching the gospel and setting the captives free Cf (Luke 4:18. Pray that believers may release their finance/treasures more for the kingdom; that they may do whatever they are doing more effectively) adding value to it; that they may improve the quality and quantity of the service they are rendering; and that they may think daily of how they can help humanity more/better.
  •   Today, Nigeria is 47 years as an independent nation. Ask God for mercy for her and for Nigerians, for drastic changes in all aspects of the economy; for better days ahead; for an end to corruption and bad leadership; for selfless leaders who will see themselves as real servants of the people; for good governance and stability of democracy; and that hooliganism and assassination may become history in the political system.
  •   Believe God for divine favour for all members of Vine Branch Ministries (VBM) this month; that He will use them and the Ministry to do more exploits for Him; that they all may be more committed to what He has put on their hands; and for open heavens for them as they start 7 days corporate fasting and praying today.

Tuesday 2nd October

  • “Being broke is a temporary situation; being poor is a mental    state” (Mike Todd). Pray that believers may reject poverty     mentality; that they may realize that God wants them to really   prosper roundabout (Ps. 35:27; III Jhn. 2); that they may       determine to prosper and work towards it; and that they may     obey and serve the Lord with all their hearts. (Job 36:11; Exo. 23:25).
  • Very often, we believe that we are so important and that without       our intervention, things may not go right. Pray that believers in   Nigeria may realize that only God is indispensable; that they may      think right to act right; that they may give all the honour to God;        that they may resist pride; and that they may worry less about      problems but put their worry in God’s hands.
  • Commit members of VBM unto God. Pray that they may not     compare themselves with others but with Christ their Example;   that they may be copycats of Him in holiness, integrity, sincerity         and faithfulness; and that they may ask God to mould and      fashion their lives into the full potential, the divine original He intended.

Wednesday 3rd October

  • Thank God for what He has used “The Word for Today”’ the quarterly daily devotional published by United Christian Broadcasters (VCB) U.K. to accomplish in the lives of saints in Ireland and the West African sub-region. Believe Him to raise up financial supporters for her and to sustain its production; that it will continue to change lives for God and unburden its readers to intercede for believers and the unsaved; for fresh oil and divine inspiration for the authors so the devotional can bring more people to the saving knowledge of Christ and to maturity; and that it will also have access into more nations.
  • Thank God for the plan of the Nigeria Government to revive the Textile Industry, with the approval of N70 billion loan to its manufacturers. Believe Him that she will clearly spell out its implementation modalities; that the fund will not be another route to grant loans to emergency and unserious textile operators; that the fund will not be diverted to other uses; that the scheme will give a new life to that sector of the economy; and that it will not be stalled by poor electricity supply.
  • Thank God for what He is using ushers in VBM to accomplish. Receive wisdom for them to relate well especially with visitors; pray that they may treat them with respect; that they may welcome them warmly and with courtesy, and treat them as royalty; and that they may never argue with or publicly embarrass them. Believe God that as they do, the visitors will become members, converts and workers.

Thursday 4th October

  • Today is World Habitat Day. Pray against air, train and road mishaps in every part of the world; raise up a standard against natural disasters – fire flood earth tremor, bomb blasts – in nations and in homes; that God may visit and heal broken/separated homes by His mercy; that love may reign amongst couples; that Christian homes may be heavens on earth and reference points for excellence; that He may intervene in war-torn nations and bring about peace; and for peace within and amongst nations of the world.
  • Thank God for Arch-bishop Peter Akinola the Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion): he was recently accorded as one of the 100 most influential people in the world, for his dogged stand against homosexualism. Believe Him that he will not compromise his biblical convinctions and in reminding the West of the authentic gospel; that the Anglican Communion will be alive to her responsibilities without seeking to arrogate secular power to herself; and that she will strongly oppose gay unions.
  • Surely, there is no reason for grace but grace. Ask the God of grace to give members of VBM grace to feel their need of grace; to give them grace to ask for grace; and to give them grace to receive grace and to use the grace when it is given.

Friday 5th October

  • Today is World’s Teachers’ Day. Pray that teachers may desire to study to improve themselves so they can impact their students more; that they may have a deeper burden for the educational system and for their students; that they may display richer diligence and faithfulness in the performance of their duties; that they may always give godly counsel to their students; that the government may progressively improve their conditions of service; and that teachers themselves may not result to industrial action or confrontational attitude with government on flimsy issues.
  • About the greatest problem in Nigeria today is insecurity of life and property. Believe God that the current government will take up the challenge of securing the people; that she will completely overhaul the police hierarchy; that she will take immediate steps to equip the police and improve their welfare package; and that she will revamp the real sector and create jobs.
  • Surely, temptation will come our way daily. Pray that members of VBM may realize that it is part of the spiritual battle if they have to grow in grace; and that they may daily put on the whole armour of God that will enable them to stand up, show up for battle and win the day.

Saturday 6th October

  • Thank God for what He has used former British Prime Minister, Mr. Tony Blair to accomplish in Africa. Believe Him that his successor, Mr. Gordon Brown, will also have a burden for the continent; that he will also support programmes on poverty eradication, health, conflict resolution and debt forgiveness therein; that he will also make her a key part of his foreign policy; that he will also push her case to the top agenda of G8 nations with a view to eradicating poverty therein; for wisdom for him to govern one of the most influential nations/economics of the world; and that Tony Blair will bring his vast experience to bear on global issues affecting Africa.
  • Thank God for the courage and sincerity of President Musa Yar’Adua of Nigeria: he is the 1st Nigerian leader to publicly declare his assets at resumption of office. Pray that all those in power may take a cue from him by letting the public know what they are worth; that public officers may henceforth strive for accountability and transparency in governance; that the President may make good his intention to sponsor a bill which will make it mandatory for public officials to declare their assets publicly; that members of the public may be allowed to make claims against false declaration by officials and that due punishment may be meted to false assets declaration; and that the President may ensure that public officials around him live well above board.
  • Prophesy unto members of VBM – God will turn their lives and ministries into lands of pilgrimage for many people; they will be distinguished and not extinguished; they will be celebrated and not tolerated; He will embarrass them with testimonies that are beyond their expectations; and He will do great works in their lives that will wipe away every embarrassment from their lives/ministries.

Sunday 7th October

  • Commit African Heads of Government unto God. Believe Him that none of them will overstay their term in office. Pray that they may realize that no leader is indispensable, that every nation needs a new leader with time; that they may not impose their own prejudices, ideas and preferences on their successors but prefer to withdraw honourably to a dignified retirement; that they may pray for the success of their successors and be ready to offer honest and meaningful suggestions that will move their nations forward when they are so approached.
  • The regular hostage-taking of oil workers in the Niger Delta regions is sending wrong signals to the rest of the world that Nigeria is not safe for business and for habitation. Ask God to intervene. Pray that the Federal Government may address the issue of resources control very meaningfully; that the Federal, State and Local Governments may engage the youths there in more productive, creative and profitable ventures through education, reorientation and direct employment; that the agitating groups may make only sensible and reasonable demands and be ready to give and take; and that they may be very willing to engage in dialogue with government and her accredited representatives whenever such offer is made.
  • Thank God for man; he is a master piece of creation (Ps. 139:14). Pray that members of VBM may always realise that they are unique, not inferior to anybody; that they may not depend on others for their own security; that they may learn to hear from God and learn to receive from Him by themselves; and that they may refuse to be beggars/borrowers.

Monday 8th October

  • Commit Africa unto God. Believe Him for good governance in all member nations and for unity amongst them; for a downplay of the brutality to which blacks are subjected in nations being dominated by Arabs; for peace within and amongst her nations especially in the Darfur region of Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Somalia; that the Heads of Government in her nations will have a burden for their people and will not attempt to perpetuate their stay in office; and that despite the diversities that exist amongst member States, the proposal for a United States of Africa will become a reality.
  • With a history dating back to 1912, the Nigerian railway system remains one of the most backward globally!! Believe God that the system will be revived soonest; that the 1955 Act that confers monopoly power to repair railway lines on the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) will be reviewed; that the Federal Government will collaborate with States and Local Governments where the NRC facilities are located to enforce environmental laws in keeping rail lines safe; and for a functional and safe railway system so as to increase the lifespan of road infrastructure, reduce road accidents and lower cost of doing business.
  • One key lesson we learn from the story in I Kings 13 is that God’s word to us is superior to anyone else’s word and therefore should be obeyed!! Pray that leaders in VBM may not rationalise His word; that they may heed His word; that they may obey its precepts; and that they may fight the tendency to walk in their own way.

Tuesday 9th October

  • Today is World Post Day, a day set aside to reflect on the efficiency and weakness of and for making suggestions towards improving the postal system. Pray that employees of the system may display faithfulness/commitment to their duties; for wisdom for them in dealing with the public; and that its management may motivate them through prompt payment of benefits. Believe God for more effectiveness in the system; and that it will effectively complement other relevant systems in making communication easier within and amongst nations.
  • The Nigerian constitution has been described as lacking the input of Nigerians, owing to its military origin. Pray that the current government may regard its review as a priority; that all the glaring defects therein that obstruct Nigeria’s march to nationhood and economic progress may be expunged; that the government may be wary of any anti-people amendment meant to please only a segment of Nigerians; and that it may include only such amendments that will strengthen federalism, democracy, free enterprise, security, good governance and transparency.
  • In the Christian/life race, there is no condition that is permanent. Pray that members pf VBM may never waiver in their faith; that they may daily watch and pray; that they may “die” daily; and that they may continuously be steadfast, immovable and abound more in the work of God.

Wednesday 10th October

  • Commit believers unto God. Pray that they may develop their skills/giftings through constant use; that they may be bold, ready to confront challenges/the devil; that they may be prudent in speech, wise enough to know what to do and how to do it; that they may pay attention to decency including their personal appearance; and that they may value God’s presence above all things. Believe Him that as they do, He will move them from rejection to relevance.
  • Thank God for what He has used Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to accomplish in Nigeria: it has been described as a “positive accident” in the administration of former President Obasanjo!! Believe Him that it will not be scrapped nor made toothless/spineless; that it will continue to apprehend and prosecute all public officers who loot or misappropriate public funds without fear or favour; that it will not be converted into an instrument of selective justice being unleashed on political opponents; and that the anti-corruption campaign in the nation will not be watered down.
  • Commit members of VBM unto God. Pray that they may persevere in trials. Believe Him that as they do, those who mock them will applaud them; their miseries will become their ministry; their mess will become their miracles; their failures will turn to fortunes, and their disappointments to destiny appointments.

Thursday 11th October

  • Commit Church leaders unto God. Pray that they may not be more interested in themselves than in those they lead; that they may highly value people who work with them; that may be approachable rather than get touchy at little things; that they may not allow minor problems to poison their outlook; that they may continuously encourage their people, lifting their spirit and charging them with fresh hope. Believe God that as they do, they will be effective leaders.
  • Remember Ibadan, the largest city in Nigeria but one of the dirtiest in Africa. Pray that the State and Local Government authorities may float aggressive public enlightenment programmes on the need for human decency. Believe God that residents particularly in indigenous quarters may stop defecating in the full glare of the public; that the urban authorities may criminalize dumping of refuse into rivers/gutters and that they may regularly evacuate refuse from the highways and assigned places; and that town planning officials will ensure that new buildings in local areas have toilet facilities.
  • Commit members of VBM unto God. Pray that they may desire growth from time to time; that they may work everyday on improving themselves; and that they may always draw on and sharpen their talents regularly. Believe God that as they do, they will not be stagnant and they will have good success.

Friday 12th October

  • Commit church leaders unto God. Pray that they may be consistent in their actions; that they may constantly express their appreciation to their followers so the latter may know that they are important; that they may always listen to suggestions, ideas and opinions without prejudging or being dismissive; that they may always explain why they like things done in certain ways; and that they may always realize that they can’t buy enthusiasm, loyalty and devotion but earn them. Believe Him that as they do, they will be exemplary leaders.
  • Apart from the individual acts of corruption and other financial crimes, Nigeria has a bad name for the criminality of her rulers who loot the treasury. Believe God that He will use the ICPC and EFCC to bring sanity to the nation; for courage for these agencies to refuse being drowned in the murky waters of politics and unnecessary controversies; that their leadership will be strict in their administration of justice and respect for the rule of law; and that they will be strengthened and adequately funded.
  • One’s ministry shouldn’t be bigger than what one is. Pray that leaders in VBM may understand that God is more concerned about building a man than a ministry; that they may daily put their lives into His hands; that they may trust Him more than ever; and that they may take time to build His truths into their foundation.

Saturday 13th October

  • Commit Church leaders unto God again. Pray that they may realise that they can’t please everyone; that they may keep a balance between listening to their followers and running out of their vision; that they may not see themselves as Mr. know-all nor over-estimate their own importance; that they may delegate authority to the right people; that they may be committed to raising up leaders who will take over from them; and that they may give them regular opportunities to lead. Believe God that as they do, what has been committed unto them will not lack human resources.
  • Remember Nigerians who have been displaced, using the survivors of Odi (Bayelsa State) massacre and former inhabitants of Bakassi Peninsula as points of contact. Pray that the Federal Government may meaningfully address their emotional and psychological sufferings; and that she will resettle them promptly and make good her promises for them. Believe God to comfort/console them and restore their losses; and that they will live in harmony amongst the residents of the areas to which they are relocated.
  • Thank God for believers: they are His redeemed children and so accepted and approved by Him (I Thess. 2:4). Pray that members of VBM may not seek the approval of men nor compare themselves with others nor impress or compete with others; that they may not worry about what others think of them; and that they may deal maturely with criticisms and conflict.

Sunday 14th October

  • Today is World Standard Day. Ask God for sanity in every nation; that nations may uphold and teach morals and values to their people; that leaders in government may not play double standard but display high level of discipline and accountability; that they may see their positions as opportunities to serve and not to “eat”; and that religious leaders and believers in politics may not compromise but be good followers of Christ. Believe God for spiritual earthquakes that will make the entire universe heaven on earth
  • Commit State governments in Nigeria unto God. Pray that they may appreciate and not just condemn past administrations unjustifiably; that they may realize that firing and hiring of senior civil servants with every change of government is unhealthy for raising a virile and stable civil service; that they may not politicize States institutions; that they may redress established cases of injustice and victimization against civil servants in strict adherence only to the law; and that they may not drag the judiciary into politics nor engage in indiscriminate appointment and removal of judicial officers.
  • Commit members of VBM unto God. Pray that they may not walk in the counsel of the ungodly not stand in the way of sinners nor sit in the seat of the scornful; and that their delight may be in the law of the Lord and that they may meditate therein day and night. Believe Him that as they do, they will be like the tree planted by the riverside which brings forth fruit in its season.

Monday 15th October

  • A price has to be paid to become an effective leader. Receive grace for Church leaders to really serve their people; that they may be prepared to sacrifice personal interest for corporate ones, and to give away the power that leadership brings to those who follow; that they may be persons who are most able to foresee where to go, who are willing to take the risk of giving out ahead to show the way and who are trusted by those who follow them; that they may invest in developing their people, allowing them to grow, make mistakes and learn from their mistakes; and that they may always return to the Bible as their ultimate source of insight.
  • An Ifa priest and professor said recently that he proposed to establish an Ifa University in Oyo State. Believe God that the proposal will turn out to be an illusion; that he will meet grave disappointments with his god; that he and the Ifa worshippers flocking around him will have mysterious encounters with the Lord; that He will deliver them from the bondage of religion; and that they all will come to worship Christ.
  • Death to the flesh is crucial to a victorious Christian life. Pray that members of VBM may die daily to self; that they may be willing to lay down their will, their desires, their pride and their independence, surrendering only to what God wants. Believe God that as they do, they will have the most rewarding life possible.

Tuesday 16th October

  • Today is World Food Day, aimed at heightening awareness of the plight of the hungry and malnourished. Pray that nations may take concrete actions against hunger; that they may float aggressive programmes and allocate adequate funds to boost food production in their respective nations; that they may particularly encourage peasants through subsidies on farming inputs; and that they may assist food producers in marketing their produce.
  • One key reason why public office holders in Nigeria want to perpetuate their stay in office is that the system is too rosy. Believe God for sanity in the system; that the time will come soonest when only servant-leaders will be attracted to politics; that public office holders will cease to indulge in extravagant lifestyles amidst general squalor and want; that jumbo salaries and allowances that are at variance with the general standards of living in the nation will no more be approved for public office holders.
  • One’s mind will absorb and reflect whatever it is exposed to!! Pray that members of VBM may never think any negative thing; that they may think excellent thoughts; and that they may desire the kind of mind that God’s Word describes.

Wednesday 17th October

  • Today is International Day for Eradication of Poverty (IDEP); aimed at reflecting on the scourge of and generating commitment to the eradication of extreme poverty worldwide. Pray that all nations may have a deeper burden for eradicating poverty; that they may float concrete programmes towards its extinction; that they may give rich assistance to the grassroots for setting up small-scale industries; and that they may focus more on developing the rural areas. Believe God particularly that poverty and wretchedness will become history in Africa.
  • Treasury looting by political leaders in Nigeria was very common in the last democratic dispensation (1999 – 2007 May). Believe God that the current government will forestall such this time; that she will put in place stringent monitoring systems aimed at making looting difficult/impossible; that the Federal and State governments will have things to show in terms of development rather than in terms of self-enhancement; and that she will fully support EFCC and ICPC in their efforts to recover stolen loots from former rulers.
  • Contentment is realizing that God has already given one all that one needs. Believe God for members of VBM to live contented lives; that they may not be so full as to deny Him; and that no prosperity or adversity will remove them from His love.

Thursday 18th October

  • Pray that Church leaders may be proof-producers and copycats of Jesus; that they may love their spouses with a passion and be friends and encouragers to their children; that they themselves may take the task of reconciling unbelievers unto God very seriously; that they may be learners, studying the Word diligently, attending seminars, learning from role models, mastering new techniques and technologies; that they may take sound and enduring decisions that are according to His will. Believe God that as they do, they will be effective leaders.
  • Public office in Nigeria has been used mainly as a tool for amassing private wealth, right from independence in 1960. Believe God for a deviation from this norm; that regular audit of public accounts and transparent budget system will henceforth strictly be in place; that the National Assembly will urgently make a law that will make it mandatory for all public office holders to declare their assets and that the assets will no longer be treated as official secrets; and that the civil service will no more be deliberately crippled nor become an accomplice in the looting of the nation.
  • If one invests in sin, one will reap disaster!! Pray that members of VBM may invest in the Spirit; that they may put all their talent, time and treasures into the service of the kingdom; that they may worship God as a habit, humbling themselves before Him; and that they may change from complacency.

Friday 19th October

  • Commit Church leaders unto God. Pray that they may develop and define their governing values; that they may, like Paul, be prepared to spend and be spent for their followers; that they may desire to launch into places/territories where the gospel has not been preached; that they may take genuine interest in the welfare of their people including putting others’ interest before theirs; that they may always exercise their faith in God concerning their purpose, family, finances, future, and relationships; and that they may be generous with their time, knowledge, wisdom, and money.
  • For some 8 years, Nigeria’s University system has been very unstable due to frequent ASUU strikes. Pray that all stakeholders may come up with a lasting strategy to prevent further avoidable disruption of the system; that they all may consistently realize that industrial actions in the system are counter-productive; that the current administration may make a clean break from the gloomy past by ensuring that the system is adequately funded; and that she and ASUU may ensure that the present over-centralisation of the system is dismantled through a sincere implementation of the University Autonomy Act.
  • Commit leaders in VBM unto God. Ask Him to give them a prayerful heart, a heart that seeks Him at all times; that He may deepen the awareness of their need of Him and of His approval; that He may give them a fresh vision of His holiness so they can truly understand what it means to revere Him and live in awe of Him; and that He may help them to be aware of every attempt the devil may make to divert them from the work He has called them to do.

Saturday 20th October

  • Pray that Church leaders may execute plans and procedures that will produce desired fruits/results and bring increase and glory to God; that they may be effective communicators, presenting their arguments simply and with clarity, humour, and  convinction; that they may desire competence, innovativeness, and excellence in whatever they do or handle; that they may believe in and pursue the synergy that comes from teamwork; and that they may excel in word and in conduct, in faith and in love, in spirit and in holiness.
  • Commit the Church in Nigeria unto God. Pray that she may hunger more to hear and understand His Word; that He may bring her to the place where the people will, like in Nehemiah’s day (Nehe.8:3), love His Word; that they may put the Bible back in its proper place; and that He may raise up strong teachers who will teach the people diligently.
  • Thank God for members of VBM and others who use this bulletin. Believe Him that they will experience His good hand as they do; that they will have heaven’s results for everything they do/handle; for grace to right all wrongs, forgiving all who have offended them, and ensuring that their lives are in line with His Word.

Sunday 21st October

  • Pray that Church leaders may have values of loyalty, covenant keeping and kindness firmly in their hearts and at the centre of their leadership philosophy; that they may exercise a team approach to leadership that will value the input and worth of every individual, not assuming that they have all the answers; that they may acknowledge and reward inputs accordingly; that they may be servant-leaders who will serve the vision and the people committed to the vision; and that they may be men of influence who will build people up and not tear them down. Believe God that as they so conform, they will be leaders who He will continuously use.
  • Thank God for Nigeria’s Head of State, Alhaji Yar’Adua: he has opted to substitute the philosophy of an inclusive government for the winner-takes-all disposition of the typical politician. Believe Him that this patriotic desire for peace amongst warring political parties will be appreciated by Nigerians and by political parties; that the offer will not cause rifts and dissension in the opposition parties; that the offer will phase out the legitimacy problem his government may have with Nigerians; and that the “alliance” will not eventually collapse nor be an instance of use, dump and destabilize.
  • Pride must die in us if Christ is to live in us. Pray that members of VBM may always realize that there will never be much spiritual progress where there is pride; that pride may die in them; that they may not think too highly of themselves; that they may be delivered from a rebellious attitude; and that they may be slow in finding faults in others.

Monday 22nd October

  • Ask God for more Church leaders, leaders with a vision, mission and goals; for leaders who will be able to discern and give priority to priorites, who will be able to sort out the more important from the less important, the important from the urgent and attend to the more important; for leaders who will be able to embrace change, let their people understand the need for the change and give time for them before effecting the change; for leaders who will feed their opportunities and starve their problems; for leaders who will build a team and make it to function through effective communication with and listening ability to their people.
  • Remember Nigeria: between 1999 and now, she has been consistently listed amongst the 1st ten corrupt nations globally!! Ask God to intervene and bring about drastic changes. Believe Him that she will embrace high level of commitment towards promoting good governance, generating economic growth and fighting corruption, investing in education and health, promoting civil liberties and the rule of law; that fighting corruption will be devoid of political interference and double standard; that State governors and Council chairman will no more run wild in mismanaging monthly allocations; and that the anti-graft institutions will be allowed to work without undue political interference.
  • Commit members of VBM unto God. Pray that they may always obey His commands; that they may walk as Jesus walked; that they may avoid hatred towards others; that they may never be ashamed to take a stand for what is true; and that they may have the courage to be named as faithful followers of His.

Tuesday 23rd October

  • Pray that Church leaders may be people with a burden for service like David, people who will be so committed to serve even when they are not appreciated, knowing that their “labour in the Lord is not in vain” (I Cor. 15:58); that they may not exalt themselves like Saul nor try to preserve their leadership at any cost; that they may respect constituted authorities even if the latter don’t deserve the honour, however costly it may be to do so; and that they may be prepared to undergo the pains and sufferings in leadership. Believe God that as they do, they will be gracious leaders that He wants them to be.
  • Commit President Musa Yar’Adua of Nigeria unto God. Pray that he may revive the nation, lead by example and make the rule of law the epicenter of his actions; that he may depoliticize electoral authorities, make public office less attractive and create opportunities for more civil monitoring of elections; and that he may ensure that there is a correlation between voting and outcomes of elections in Nigeria. Believe Him that he will not be as unwise as to believe that he alone knows what is best for the nation; and for courage to throw away all the stinking “bath water” and yet preserve the baby.
  • Commit members of VBM unto God. Ask Him to grant them the courage to confess their faults to those they have offended and the grace to accept the confessions of those who have offended them; and that they may become ministers of reconciliation to bless their families on His behalf.

Wednesday 24th October

  • Today is United Nations Day. Ask God to use this international body to bring about peace and harmony within and amongst nations; pray for wisdom and large hearts for her officers; that all member nations may embrace fundamental human rights and santity of the constitution; and that the body may continuously work towards strengthening the economy of under-developed nations as well as intervene in war-torn nations of the world.
  • Thank God for what He is using Church leaders in Nigeria to accomplish. Pray that they may always realise that they are empowered so they can be vessels unto honour, to take away sorrow from people and give them joy, and to improve quality of life; that they may draw sinners to Christ, increase God’s kingdom, and establish believers; and that they may break the hold of Satan in people’s lives, and lead them into new realms of glory, and make positive impacts on lives.
  • Commit all people in leadership positions in VBM unto God. Believe Him that they will show great restraint in exercising their authority; that they will forgive every wrong that may be done to them; that they will not grudge anyone; and that He will guide them in judgment and will teach them His ways (Ps. 25:9).

Thursday 25th October

  • Pray that Church leaders may learn to manage their time well, regularly taking an inventory of where their time goes with a view to amending it; that they may focus more on discretionary time that will really make positive impacts, avoiding time stealers; that they may know their strengths and weaknesses, improving on the former and correcting the latter; that they may be men of integrity, taking responsibility for wrongs done and taking steps to correct or make restitution for those wrongs; that they may take decisions that are consistent with who they are and what they believe; and that they may be good followers as well, not holding unto leadership too tightly.
  • All elections held so far in Nigeria, except that of 12th June 1993, have been judged fraudulent. Believe God for a reversal of this trend; that INEC will henceforth be adequately shielded by law from partisanship and not be tied to the Presidency’s apron strings; that its membership will cut across political parties and be drawn from the mass media, organized labour, academic and other credible civil society groups; and that political office holders will never again see getting into office as do-or-die affair.
  • Commit members of VBM unto God. Pray that they may clothe themselves with the Lord Jesus; that they may not think about how to gratify their sinful nature; that they may put off drunkenness, sexual immorality; jealousy, confrontational attitudes; and that they may be His faithful followers.

Friday 26th October

  • Thank God for what He is using the Church to accomplish: 88% of Christians make their decision to follow Christ as children!! Speak an explosion unto the Church; pray that His purpose for her will be fully accomplished; that He will still use her to do more exploits for her; that He may engrace Christian parents and teachers to catch youths young for His work and that He may, by His power, convict children and youths to follow Christ totally from their early years. Believe Him that the gates of hell will not be able to prevail against the Church.
  • Commit the Church in Nigeria unto God. Speak an explosion unto her, for grace to do more exploits for Him, and to teach the undiluted word of His; and raise up a standard against all communication barriers to the gospel in the land. Believe Him for courage for him to say “no” to attempts by political lords to control him or dance to their tune; for wisdom for him with which to deal with the militants of the Niger Delta region; for grace for him to stamp his identity on the nation’s political landscape and be his own man; that he will be objective in all things brought to him and take enduring decisions on them; and that He will help him to make positive impacts on the nation.
    •   Commit leaders in VBM unto God. Pray that they may always realize that they cannot do anything worthwhile without the anointing; that it is the anointing that will birth fruitfulness; that without it, they are in trouble; and that they may guard the anointing jealously. Believe God that as they do, they will not fall.

    • Thank God for Christianity: it is all about giving (Jhn. 3:16; 14:16; Matt. 20:28). Pray that believers may not only be willing but also give of their best; that they may give of their money and their materials; that they may make their talents and skills available in service to God and fellow human beings; that they may give their time and energy for the Master’s work and to help others; that they may minister love to others and give their live for the cause of the gospel; and that they may be wiling to give their knowledge, comfort and strength for kingdom work in season and out or season. Believe God that as they do, He will reward them commensurably.
    • In recent times, kerosene explosions have been common in Nigeria with many of the victims disabled for life. Believe God that the government will henceforth ensure that kerosene is available on demand at filling stations so there will be no need to hoard it; that the product will only be sold in only approved places; that it will be easily affordable; that those responsible for the explosion will always be apprehended and severely

punished; and that victims of the explosion will always be catered for and compensated.

Pray that believers may give in sincerity of heart and without seeking man’s recognition; that their giving may come from willing hearts not as a duty or mere routine; that they may give promptly and sacrificially as He has blessed them, without making rash vows/pledges, and without borrowing to give; that they may give in simplicity and humility, cheerfully and ungrudgingly, realizing it is a privilege to so do; and that they may do it in faith expecting God to meet their needs and expecting to increase in the grace of giving. Believe God that as they so conform, He will bless them back.
    • Thank God for the pragmatic initiative of the Lagos State Governor Babatund Fashola to control crime in the State. Pray that other States will take a cue from him, realizing that they are expected to be effective chief security officers of their respective States; that they may collaborate with their State Commissioners of Police to give the criminal gangs a good fight and root them out; that they may provide considerable fund with which to equip the Police adequately with needed materials; and that the Federal Government may provide job opportunities to idle hands that are prone to crime.

    • There were flood disasters in some parts of Lagos, Ogun, and Cross River States of Nigeria during the last rainy season caused by torrential rains and blocked drainages. Believe God to console occupants of homes submerged and relations of people who died therefrom; that these States will see the disaster as a wake-up call; that houses on reclaimed lands and flood-prone environments will henceforth be discouraged or well-managed; that the government will open up the hinterland to attract-sub-urban residential settlements; and that the people will desist from blockage of drainage channels and poor refuse dumping.
    • As a Giver Himself (Jhn. 3:16), God desires that believers give of their material possessions. Pray that members of VBM may tithe fully, give generous offerings and support servants of God; that they may give to their parents, to the poor, fatherless, widows, blind and other vulnerables; and that they may give willingly and beyond their convenience level. Believe God that as they do, He will bless them in return in geometric proportions.

Believe God that as they do, youths will engage in productive activities rather than seek refuge abroad.
    • Commit the current Federal Government unto God. Believe Him that it will continue to operate by both the spirit and letter of the constitution; that its actions will be regulated by the rule of law and the imperatives of checks and balances; that it will not interfere in the course of justice no matter the status of who is involved; that it will continue to be a listening government; that the president will not be as overbearing as to use executive authority wrongly; and that never again will Nigeria experience dictatorial democracy.

    • No one is infallible. Ask the Lord to open the eyes of believers in Nigeria who have missed their ways to open their eyes; that He may order their steps to where their blessings are; that they may turn their back, realizing that going further doesn’t make things right in front; that they may realign properly, finding out where they missed it and re-starting; and that they may avoid the previous mistakes.
